Apple MacBook Pro MB604LL/A 17-Inch Laptop (2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive)

I'm not a gamer, so this review can not be helpful for those who want a computer to play games.

I've been a professional developer / architect for 17 years. I started with MSDOS 2.0 and Microsoft has ridden the wave all the way Vista 64 and I had a couple of years with UNIX. I have personally owned or worked with computers from Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM. I have heard about Apple products, but mostly rejected them as more toy than tool. (I was not alone in this perspective.) I like Microsoft, but after working with it for most of 20 years, I decided to look at something else.

I never thought I would buy an Apple but here it is. I am impressed to say the least, and I see Apple as a serious tool that also makes a cool toy.

Advantages:
Easy - probably the lightest notebook I've ever worked with or owned

Solid - Normally when you get laptops at 15.4 or higher, the chassis flex clear as you can see them bend and creak. But because of its one-piece construction and lightweight aluminum, the MacBook feels good when you carry it. I do not creak, and there is no noticeable bend when lifted.

Battery life - It just keeps going and going and going ... Actually, I look up to 4 hours of life when fully charged. My previous computer never exceeded 1.75 hours.

Size - It is very thin and transporting it around is very convenient. I had a 17 "and while I like the large display its uncomfortable to wear as a book.

Magnetic - When you close the lid, the owner is rewarded with a very solid container instead of a "creak" "heel" as you hear from so many other laptops that use a plastic display and mechanical lock. Open the screen is just a nice. You place your thumb under the lip and lift. The laptop can slide a bit on slippery surfaces, but the lid comes up smooth and controlled.

Keyboard - This is a good job. Has the "Home", "Page Up", "Page Down", the legendary "All" key? No, do not need it. A little research and practice and you will find that these "missing" keys, the keyboard function keys, and I would not miss them at all. Other keyboard "key-float" (that rattle you hear when you can easily stroke your finger back and forth over a laptop keyboard) is almost nonexistent. So when you write it sounds like your ball up the mug plastic, and you need not bother your neighbors. Key throw is short but very nice. Another thing I like about the keyboard is that you do not want, you will break your keyboard, if your touch is a bit heavy.

Display - The display is a work of art. That not only looks good, but flex has been reduced to almost nothing. It feels very solid and you do not feel you need to worry about tilting the screen from the corner. The glass cover over LED-backlit LCD display is awesome. You can actually clean the screen without the LCD screen colors distort competition. Not to mention that automatically slow down in low light and key lights aboard the same low light conditions. it is a nice touch. Screen brightness is at least as bright as my desktop LCD screen in bright light.

Touch Pad - Anyone who has tried to use the touch pads on other computers (I hate them in general) will love this touchpad. It seems that the iPhone (except the scroll is reversed for obvious reasons - you're not actually touching the screen). Touch is light and very smooth. Make the entire touch pad button is brilliant, it took me almost no time to use it and now I just shoot a hole through the Dell touchpad before I realize I have to click the buttons. I have no problem with accidental contact, move my cursor away from where I write.

Quiet - I have yet to hear the fans. It makes me wonder if they ever work.

DVD SuperDrive - Finally! No cup holder will slide out from the side of my laptop. Just slip the disc in and your done. It serves as the CD player in a car. It is easy to slide from the screen or a key on the keyboard.

Fit and finish - the best I've ever seen. The only thing I've seen is a very small shift of the Express Card/34 castle door. But you really have to look close to see it.

Operating System - WOW. Fast, no anti-virus stable: It just works. I will not go into too much in the Olympics but I will say that when I realized how Apple likes doing things OS X is very appealing. Not to mention that it sleeps and wakes up faster than anything I've ever worked with. Open the screen and it sits there saying "come on, I'm tired of waiting for you."

Built-in accelerometer - Not sure what they are good, but they are cool. Like the iPhone MacBook Pro has three accelerometers. There is a Stanford Laptop Orchestra MacBook Pro to make music using these accelerometers.

No fresh air vents - I do not like fresh air ports in the bottom of laptops. They are easily connected and they suck fuzz and dust in the cooler. With my previous computer the fresh air ports were on your computer right where it puts on the legs. The result was that they ran a great risk of overheating the computer. MacBook Pro draws cooling air through the keyboard, and therefore has a flat bottom makes it much better to invest in your lap.

Cons:
Chassis - Although it is an ingenious piece of engineering there are some very minor problems.

A: Always pick up your computer with both hands. While this is true for all laptops, you want to last, is there something more important with this. The metal around the Ethernet port is processed very thin, which was needed to fit the large end of the rather narrow side of the laptop. So if you have the screen open and snatch the laptop with you left hand and the thumb of Jack, you can dent the metal around it. It does not warp or twist the chassis, it is too strong, but you can see a small indentation in an otherwise flat piece of metal.

Two: The metal in the battery / HDD Cover is very thin and even seem to hang below the lip of the chassis. You have to really look to see it and it's not all the time. I do not think it is warped or bent, but simply the natural flexibility of aluminum.

Trackpad Click - While I absolutely love the touch pad (actually I just use a mouse anymore when I'm programming it because of the type of software). If you try to click on the top of the plate (closest to the screen), the force required to click goes up a lot.

Price? - Not really a Con. Some have complained about the price. Three and a half ago I paid $ 5,700 for a Dell 9100 laptop (all the bells and whistles, Windows XP Pro, Office Pro, it works). There has been a great computer that is set on grass and my family uses it. I've only had two problems with it. The dreaded Mexican jumping keys (a key fly off the keyboard when you press it while typing, AKA broken key) Dell replaced the keyboard with no problems and the hard drive crashed and should be replaced. Dell Computer when new cost more than twice the MacBook Pro is doing today, and the only thing you have Mac (old age and the technology not withstanding), it is 1920 x 1200 pixels compared to the Mac is 1440 x 900 screen. If I would order the most powerful 15.4 notebook Apple sells today, I would still pay half the price of Dell and Apple has a lot more and have better overall quality.

In summary, this is a performance that the engineers should designers and developers feel proud. There is some room for improvement, but these improvements are at a level that other laptops have to improve a lot just to get Apple's shortcomings.

I could go on but I think that's enough. Apple has really developed a good product in both hardware and software, and I recommend it highly.

Apple MacBook Pro MC371LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop

After a three year old Dell dies on me (to be fair it was expressed by several trips to and from school in my bag, sometimes while it was still on) and a Toshiba Satellite fail after a year, I was tired of paying bargain prices and get a frustrating experience to go with it.

My girlfriend had talked about buying a Mac and I have always balked at them as too expensive. Well, most of the big problems with my old laptop problems with compatibility between hardware and software, often frustrating search for new drivers. Knowing that Apple makes the hardware and developing software for their computers led me to believe that they could integrate the two aspects better than the computer I used. I still have nightmares about all the drivers I had to hunt when I downgraded my Toshiba from Windows Vista to XP.

I had actually bought a 13 "MacBook Pro with a glossy screen from Amazon a few days before Apple made its major upgrade in April 2010. It was a beautiful looking machine and was easy to use after I have become accustomed to the differences between the PC, ie what that is "Finder" But 13 "screen was a bit small for me?. I do some photography work and I watch movies on it too so I decided 15 "MacBook Pro would be the way to go. When they did the upgrade to all their machines, I decided to buy directly from Apple.

I have debated long and hard on the glossy vs matte option. To go with the high resolution screen (1680 X 1050 in contrast to the usual 1440 X 900) was a no-brainer. After doing some online research, I chose matte option (as opposed to the default blank screen). I had never seen a matte screen that the local Best Buy had one in stock. I was a little nervous about my decision, but I called Apple Support and easily arranged for a return of my not-yet-arrived 15 "MacBook Pro, I have one with a blank screen instead. The person I spoke with even arrange labels return shipping paid by Apple upgrades I do not drive or RAM, because I can make them yourself or get them done later, for a lot cheaper than Apple's prices.

The new 15 "w / matte screen came and I opened some high resolution you-tube videos and compared it side by side to the blank. It was midday, and a single window in our room was to create all sorts of reflections on the glossy screen, while the mistress was unphased. Sure, the blacks on the glossy was deeper and the colors could have "jumped" a little more, but knew that I would use my laptop in a room illuminated by daylight or a bright light on henious reflections on the glossy screen was definitely a no-go for me. There was a window that was in front of the computer and not even directly shining on the screen. I was really glad I decided to go Matt.

That said, I have put up Photoshop CS5 and it goes well. Much faster than my old laptop. I appreciate many of the little things that Apple puts into its products is becoming more and more noticeable every day, I use it. (As their search function is always available with a click from the desktop) I plan to purchase an AppleCare plan at the end of my one-year warranty period to ensure it keeps me at least 3 years. Hopefully I could keep this in 4 or 5 years.

All in all, if you have $ $ I highly recommend this product.

Pros
- Unibody design is super-sturdy and elegant.
- Love the matte screen
- The high-resolution upgrade helps with multi-tasking, programming, image editing, web surfing, ect ..
- Super Fast w / Photoshop
- Good side to side viewing angle (better than the screen on the Windows-based laptops I have used)
- Keyboard is very convenient to use
- The speakers are adequate
- The trackpad is awesome! Large and easy to use with 2, 3 and 4 controls the finger is not available anywhere else
but on a Mac. I rarely use a mouse more like works well to use it in my lap.
- Quick startup time. Open and close the lid to "sleep" mode, waiting time is virtually zero.
- Good battery life

Cons
- Expensive (duh)
- Can get warm on the bottom on the back, where the processor is located.
- Up and down viewing angle is not as good (this is common w / laptop itself)
- Some programs are not available for Mac
- USB 2.0 (instead of the newer 3.0)
- Glowing Apple logo on the back of the screen is a bit of advertising I could do without.
- Sharp edges on the front (can apparently filed down, but I am cautious about doing this)
- No Blu-ray drives

Update:

Maybe it's just me, but my Apple seems to have more problems with Flash and streaming Internet content than I ever had with a computer. I know that Apple is at war with Adobe and have gone to great lengths to belittle the Flash format. They do not seem to have worked so hard to ensure that the Flash content works perfectly with their machines. Video streaming will stop or not to charge fully. It does not happen often, but with a PC I never had any problems like this at all.

Then my power supply gave me intermittent problems (with a few days the flow would come in and go out with a couple of seconds for no reason). I called Apple Support and they recommended to use only a shortened version (the current can be adjusted to be either longer with an extra cable or not) and then call them back if the problem persists. The guy I talked to thought cord that stretches installation can be the problem. Well I had no major problems for a while ....

So yesterday (the day before I started a new job teaching at a university) the power supply stops working altogether. I called Apple and they say, contact an authorized Apple service providers in my area (none of them were open that day because it was Sunday). The next day, Monday, I called on the two authorized service providers in my area, one of which says I have to leave my computer all night to try to determine if I am entitled to a new power supply, and the others who are not able to handle my problems when I was available to come.

Now I try to contact Apple support and all day I've had the most ridiculous message saying

"At this point the customer service is not available for your support due to unavoidable reasons .. Sorry for the inconvenience .."

I guess it's impossible for Apple to properly staff their service, so as not to be available was of course inevitable. So I stuck with a fake power cable for now.

I decided to choose the solution that I call Apple about my problem, instead of them calling me. It worked much better. I received my replacement cord in the mail today, a Thursday, after my original power supply stops working completely on Sunday. I must return the old, actually started working intermittently now. If Apple determines that I replaced a non-broken power they will charge me $ 80. We'll see ...

Apple MC372LL/A MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.53GHz Laptop

This particular MBP is excellent. I use a computer quad core for graphics-intensive work and picked one of these to help with development - sites and research. This laptop blows away my Windows Quad Core, totally! It's so fast. Startup for about 30 seconds, shut for 2-4 seconds, resume from sleep in 0-2 seconds. Applications open in seconds and there are no delays, hiccups or awkward moments when you wonder if your PC is out for tea. OS X is stable with lots of news that QuickLook, which saves lots of time. PDF files can be viewed directly. Images can be selected and displayed more quickly or in slideshows. Wonderful zoom. For Windows laptops, a wireless mouse is an absolute must. I bought a Logitech set while waiting for help with MBP, but I use the touchpad 90% of the time. It is as useful and responsive. The screen is gorgeous - yummy good. I like how Mac OS is so simple and easy to use, plus there are some really good freeware program to improve things.
Here are a couple.
Pathfinder - not free - Tabbed Finder by two panels. A must!
iGetThingsDone - Data organizer
NeoOffice - free office suite
Opera browser - even if I use Safari 95% of the time I use Opera to get the html and image elements from Web pages
Carbon Copy Cloner - backup accidental
ClamXAV - Antivirus
Burn - Backup and writing DVDs / CDs
FileZilla - FTP / upload files
GrabberWindow - essential - to take screenshots
Inkscape - vector app
JAlbum - create online photo albums
Jumpcut - tuned up the clipboard
Journler - excellent for taking notes
MacSword - Bible Browser / study
Mind Music Pro - Mind Mapping. Not for free - buy the Pro version has lots of plusses to the free version
ffmpegx - convert video
Name missing - Batch File Renamer
Qumana - remote not blogging
Seashore - image editor like Photoshop
Side Note - desktop note reminder - discreet and handy
unRarX - Unpack - Recommended
VLC - video player
Vox - music player
VMFusion - not free but affordable - run Windows without having to leave OS X

There is no reason to buy a Windows laptop when Mac is so good.
Can not recommend this enough. When it comes to heat, I use my own solution, if, if I have not noticed it gets hot at all. I chopped up a pencil eraser into 1 cm slices and place one in each corner. This 1 inch hole allows the computer is cool, plus the eraser will not allow the laptop to slide from side to side. I would buy a MBP Rain stops, but erasers seem to do the trick.
I can not play games on my MBP. Laptop computers, whether Windows or apples that are not made for playing graphics-intensive games. Slim bodies can not handle. Eventually the heat will destroy the internal components. I have been tempted to play GRID on my MBP, but only to see the amazing level of detail to achieve. I will leave the network only for demo for 5 minutes every 6 months or so. But the sensible rule-intensive games.
Older games should be ok. But it is pointless to spend so much money on such a machine and then wasting it on games.
My only gripe is that the MBP has to come with video cards that are included in the box, or a coupon so that buyers can download them for free from a local iStore.

Apple MacBook Pro MC373LL/A 15-inch 2.66GHz Core i7 Laptop

I've had this computer for three weeks now, waiting to write a review until I had fully experienced it. The first came with a bad keyboard, sent back to Apple for replacement. They returned the MacBook Pro a little from the daily freezes at which point the mouse and keyboard were locked out, but the process continues and after about 5 minutes, control was restored. This proved to be a very common problem, which is fully documented on Apple's website. Fortunately, Apple released an update to Leopard (10.6.4), who solved the problem for most of us.

This computer is incredibly fast, especially if you have fully loaded with memory (8 GB) and an ordered solid state. But even without the SSD and the standard deviation of memory (4 GB), it is the fastest MacBook ever done with almost 30%. I love it.

I recommend users of this computer with 8 GB of memory, if at all possible. The extra memory makes a big difference in performance, and are not very expensive. In addition, this computer with two options for screen resolution. I got the high resolution display with anti-reflection, and it is a pleasure to work with. Now when I go back to my old MacBook Pro with standard resolution, I notice and are bothered by the difference.

Other studies have listed some advantages of this computer, except for speed. So let me mention some of the topics:

The first graphics-intensive applications generate much heat. When the graphic is changed to faster chips (this happens automatically if you choose to always use the faster chips in the energy settings), the computer becomes warm. Not so hot that you can not use it on your lap, but approaching that level.

2nd Rain Power, which also generates much heat. Run a program that simultaneously activate more cores and faster graphics chip is the perfect storm, and this computer gets really hot on the bottom. Now you can not comfortably work with it on his lap. If this is a typical situation, get a cooling pad. I use Logitech N100 and it completely solves the problem, at no additional cost and battery consumption (it uses the USB port). But I often run calculations in the background, and if there is a Cooling Pad crucial. I expect there will also be important if you use this computer for gaming.

3rd Battery life is very dependent on usage. The high speed graphics options are great if you're running on battery, it is a serious drain. Unfortunately, software engineers are not an option to always use the slower graphics chip in the battery. This is an important option that should be implemented in a future version, even if it means some programs will not run properly. The battery problem is an error that prevents this computer from being a great travel computer. You can not replace the battery and if you travel, and the battery gets low, you simply have to close up shop or find an outlet. These are very difficult to find, and the airlines often do not give companies the seats or in their waiting rooms at airports.

Despite the above issues that forced me to give this machine 4 stars, I love it. It's the best laptop I've ever used, although I will take another MacBook Pro when I travel because of battery issues. The speed of this machine is comparable to a 3 GHz desktop Nehalem Mac Pro. The i7 chip is actually a powerful processor and all your applications can run about 30% faster than previous Macs.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop

This is a capable computer, but the so-called value addition that makes this model $ 300 more expensive than the regular Macbook Pro 13 is hardly worth it. If you are thinking of buying this version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, you can consider taking a look at the usual Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL / A 13.3-inch laptop.

The only difference between the $ 1499 MBP 13 and $ 1199 MBP 13 is the processor speed and disk space - this MBP 13 has a 2.66 GHz processor and 320 GB hard drive, while the standard MBP 13 has a 2.4 GHz processor and 250 GB hard drive.

So you pay $ 300 more (20% of the cost of $ 1499 MBP 13 or 25% of the cost of the standard $ 1199 MBP 13) and only get 70 GB more hard drive space and a processor speed of 266 MHz (10%). Whether it's worth a $ 300 price difference compared to the standard MPB 13 is questionable.

Everything else is identical in both MPB 13 is - SuperDrive, backlit keyboard, multitouch trackpad, screen (1280 x 800 resolution glossy LED-backlit screen), iSight Camera, NVIDIA GeForce 320 integrated graphics, sound speakers, the amount of RAM (4 GB - good for multitasking), the number of ports (1 FireWire 800 port, two USB 2.0 ports), SD card slot, wireless capabilities (802.11n, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 and Gigabit Ethernet -10/100 / 1000). SAME EVERYTHING.

The bundled software is also the same - OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and iLife 09 suite of tools to create content. A 1-year warranty on parts and 90 days of telephone technical support are also standard on both models

Let us consider a situation where you choose to purchase the standard MBP 13 instead of this model. You will save $ 300.

You can then add it to buying a 500 GB hard drive (about $ 80 on Amazon) and install it yourself. There is a larger hard drive than the one included in this $ 1,499 model. Installation instructions are in the MBP 13 manual and it does not void the warranty. You need a Phillips # 00 screwdriver. Installation videos are also available online.

You also get $ 220 back that (if you choose to) you can buy AppleCare or SquareTrade, and protects your machine for 2 years after the first year limited warranty expires.

If you are interested in spending your money on the best way, you must consider the standard Apple MacBook Pro MC374LL / A 13.3-inch laptop is 99% identical in their hardware and capacity compared to the $ 1499 MBP 13 and is in all respects a much better value for money buy.
